Ghostly Goings On In Derby

Wednesday, November 17 2004

Derbyshire County Cricket Club Derbyshire are to rename their one-day team in 2005 and will be now be known as "The Derbyshire Phantoms" when playing in the totesport and Twenty20 competitions.

The club currently known as the Derbyshire Scorpions have decided to make the change five years after county sides took nicknames for the first time.

The club said that they wanted a name that has some direct relationship to Derbyshire and its proud history; Derby is reputedly the most haunted city in England and Rolls Royce has also had a proud history in Derbyshire and it currently has a car named The Phantom said David Houghton and Luke Sutton from the club.

Luke Sutton and David Houghton worked closely with a local radio station that ran a competition, which invited its listeners to offer suggestions for the new name.

The response was fantastic and it was clear that the interest in the name change was touching an audience which was previously fairly untouched.

It also appears that Derbyshire were so keen to inform everyone of the name change that they jammed the ECB webservers when they sent the same press release to each of the counties just 960 times each!
