Zimbabwean rebels abandon dispute
Thursday, November 18 2004The lengthy dispute between Zimbabwe’s rebel players and the ZCU has finally drawn to a close after the rebels decided to withdraw from the dispute resolution process that was set up in July in an attempt to resolve the case.
The 15 leading players were sacked in May after a disagreement with their board over captaincy and selection issues.
The rebel’s lawyer, Chris Venturas, advised the chairman of the tribunal, John Traicos, that his clients did not wish to continue with the case.
A source told The Times, "They (the rebels) have no trust in former ZCU officials to pay compensation or to change their selection policies. They feel disenchanted with their lawyer in Zimbabwe, their families have had enough of the uncertainty and they feel that the arbitration process would be lengthy and expensive."
Meanwhile, the current Zimbabwean team is due to host the English in a 5-match ODI series, starting next week.
