Somerset Sign South African Duo

Somerset County Cricket Club announce the signing of Graeme Smith, the South African Captain, as the Club Captain for the 2005 season.

The Club also announce the signing of Albie Morkel as the second overseas player on the recommendation of Graeme Smith.

Both signings are subject to the agreement of the South African Cricket Board and the Club are awaiting that decision.

Chief Executive, Peter Anderson said, "The Cricket Panel feel that the Somerset team to be successful needs a no nonsense leader and a world-class opening batsman. In Graeme Smith they have both. Albie Morkel is recognised as a rising star in South African cricket and his development within English county cricket will be good for the Club as well as South Africa".

Depending upon selection for the South African Tour to the West Indies, both players will be available to play for Somerset from 27 May. The Club awaits confirmation of both Ricky Ponting's and Marcus Trescothick's availability to play for Somerset in April and early May.

Smith however will then be fully available because South Africa have no international commitments next year from the end of a tour to the West Indies in mid-May to the start of a home series against New Zealand in October.

UCB media manager Gerald de Kock said the board was considering the request. "All contracted players need clearance from the UCB before they can play domestic cricket in other countries."

Meanwhile Smith said, "It's a fantastic opportunity - playing county cricket is something I have always wanted to do."
