Rain ruins decider

Saturday, December 11 2004

The 3rd and deciding match of the Chappell – Hadlee trophy has been abandoned. Persistent rain ensured that not a ball was to be bowled in what promised to one of the games of the season.

The game was officially called off at 5:15pm, meaning the thrilling series finished one-all. Both teams shared the trophy as joint winners.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting commented, "It's frustrating and disappointing, it was shaping up to be a great game today.”

Stephen Fleming spoke positively of the series, “We have a lot more confidence in our one-day side. We feel pretty close to Australia. In some areas we may be ahead."

Ponting on the other hand rated Australia’s performance as, “okay”, adding, "We didn't play anywhere near our best cricket, particularly with the bat"

The next Chappell – Hadlee Trophy series will be played in 2005-06 in New Zealand.
