Zimbabwe end solidly on Day 1

Saturday, January 15 2005

Taibu won the toss and decided to bat.

After a poor display in the first match, Zimbabwe needed a good start to gain some confidence, and openers Matsikenyeri and Rogers added 65 runs up front.

Zimbabwe then collapsed to 111-4. Matsikenyeri had scored a solid 50 and failed to capitalize on his start, a theme that runs throughout this innings.

Mazakadza departed for 40, and Chigumbura fell for 34, to bring Zimbabwe to 221-6, at which point Taibu and Panyangara saw their team to 244-6 at the close of play.

Had one Zimbabwean batsman gone on to make a big score things would be looking much better for the African nation, but at this point the teams' performances are even at best.

A collapse tomorrow would quickly turn the match fully into Bangladesh's control, and undo any chance of Zimbabwe bringing back respect in this series.

Brief Scores

Zimbabwe 244-6
Matsikenyeri 51
Taibu 49

Haque 4-74
