Australia wins series 2-0

Tuesday, November 30 2004

Australia has finished off the New Zealand tail-end to complete an emphatic 213-run victory to take the Trans-Tasman series 2-0.

It took just a session and six balls for the Aussies to take the required 5 wickets for victory.

McGrath gave Australia the perfect start to the day when he managed to find Jacob Oram’s outside edge, just 3 balls into the first over of the day. Oram departed for a well-made 40, at that stage the highest score of the innings, leaving the New Zealand total on 6/150.

McCullum, the last of the recognised batsmen, fell LBW shortly after for 36 to Gillespie.

Franklin came to the crease to join Vettori who, unlike most of his top-order, looked relatively comfortable against the opposition's attack.

The pair managed to put on 46 to take the score to 206, before Franklin was dismissed caught behind by Kasprowicz for 13.

Wiseman, the first innings night watchman, managed to give Vettori some support and helped on his way to his 7th test fifty.

However, in the last over before lunch, Vettori got a tad too aggressive while attempting to hit a 6th boundary and holed out to mid-off, out to Lehmann for 59, bringing an end to the fist session of play with the Kiwis on 9/243.

In the first over after tea, Warne dismissed Chris Martin for 2, brining an end to the test and indeed the series, a series which the Australians dominated in everyway.

As had happened in the first innings, all the Australian bowlers did their job and shared the wickets evenly. All 5 bowlers, including part-timer Lehmann, picked up 2 wickets each.

New Zealand will be looking for redemption in the upcoming one-day series, which begins on December 5 in Melbourne.
